    The Bright and Boring: The Two Sides of Our Inner Self

    Life’s a bit like a seesaw, isn’t it? One moment, you’re on cloud nine, feeling like you can conquer anything, and the next, you’re down in the dumps, wondering what went wrong. We all have these two sides of ourselves – the dazzling and the dull. I am often bamboozled by these twin aspects of my soul but nevertheless, I am intrigued by them. Here are some of my thoughts on it.

     

    The Dazzling Side:

     

    These are the moments when you’re on fire. You’re inspired, confident, and everything you touch seems to turn to gold. That’s your dazzling side in full swing. It’s when you ace that presentation at work, and everyone applauds your brilliance. It’s the thrill of finishing a project you’re passionate about and seeing it come to life. I love these moments and wish they were an everyday occurrence. The dazzling side isn’t always about big achievements, though. It’s also those small victories that light up your day, like finding a parking spot right in front of your favorite coffee shop on a busy morning or nailing a tricky recipe that turns out to be delicious. It’s those times when your heart skips a beat, and you can’t help but smile.

     

    The Dull Side:

     

    Now, on to the other side – the dull one. This is when life feels like it’s playing a prank on you. It’s those dreary, routine days when you drag yourself out of bed, dreading the daily grind. Ever been there? It’s when you spill your morning coffee all over your clean shirt or get stuck in an endless line at the grocery store or Walmart. The dull side isn’t always about disasters, but it’s about the humdrum of life. It’s that sense of monotony when you’re doing the laundry for the umpteenth time, or you’re stuck in traffic on your way home from work. It’s those moments when you’re questioning whether you’re making any progress in life.

     

    Finding Balance:

     

    But here’s the thing – both sides of the coin are crucial. The dazzling side gives you the spark, the motivation, the zest for life. It’s what makes you dream big, try new things, and reach for the stars. It’s your superpower against the mundane. On the flip side, the dull moments teach you patience, resilience, and gratitude. They remind you that not every day is a grand adventure, and that’s okay. They ground you, keep you humble, and make you appreciate the simple joys of life.

     

    Life’s a Symphony:

     

    Realistically speaking, life’s a beautiful symphony of the dazzling and the dull. The ups and downs, the highs and lows – they’re all part of the melody. Just like a seesaw, you need both sides to stay balanced. The dazzling moments light up your path, while the dull ones make you appreciate the journey. So, next time you’re having a dazzling day, thank God, savor it, relish it, and use it to fuel your dreams. And when you find yourself in a dull moment, pray, take a deep breath, find God’s lesson, and remember that these moments are the building blocks of your character and your story. Your life and mine is an interplay of the bright and boring and that makes life beautiful, relatable, and uniquely yours. Embrace both sides of your soul because they’re what make you human, imperfect, and wonderfully you. “You are fearfully and wonderfully made” … Embrace it!

    When I first started my practice, I remember reading a statistic about divorce that I found shocking. And that was that 40-50% of all marriages in the United States ended in divorce.

    According to recent surveys, however, the divorce rate in the U.S. fell by 18% between 2008 and 2016. While everyone has their theory as to why the rate is falling, the theory among therapists is that it is because marriage counseling actually works, and more couples are giving it a try.

    If you and your spouse are experiencing difficulties, here are some reasons why you should give marriage counseling a try:

    Identifying Patterns

    One of the biggest benefits of seeking counseling is having help seeing negative behavioral patterns, whether those patterns are yours as individuals and/or as a couple. Healing can only begin once patterns have been recognized.

    5 Warning Signs It’s Time to Try Couples Counseling

    When you first fell in love, you could never imagine that someday the sound of your partner chewing could make you want to scream. It’s inevitable that once we are out of our honeymoon phase and reality sets in, we realize that all relationships take work and compromise. But while some couples may hit bumps in the road every so often, other couples find themselves in bigger trouble, with neither party knowing exactly how to fix things.

    If you are in a relationship that is no longer feeling healthy, here are 5 warning signs that it may be time to try couples counseling:

    1. There is No Longer Healthy Communication

    Once you have a communication breakdown, you are unable to rationally share thoughts, feelings, and concerns with each other. Beyond this, unhealthy communication tends to leave one or both partners feeling depressed, angry and hopeless.

    2. Trust Has Been Broken

    When there has been infidelity, it is very difficult for the couple to rebuild trust and repair the damage. While there is no magic pill to recover from an affair, a therapist can offer tools and strategies to rebuild trust.

    3. You’re More Like Roommates

    If you and your partner act more like roommates than romantic partners, this indicates a lack of intimacy and a potential need for professional help.

    4. One or Both of You Has Begun Acting Out

    You try to mask your real feelings for as long as possible, but then you start to act out the hurt and resentment you may be feeling. For instance, if your partner has been unfaithful and you have agreed to stay in the relationship and work things out. But over time you find yourself lashing out, acting rude and trying to make them believe you are having an affair so they will feel the same kind of hurt. This acting out is unhealthy for both people and is a BIG indicator you need to seek some help.

    5. When the Only “Solution” Seems to be Separation/Divorce

    A break from negative energy can be very helpful to the relationship. But when a temporary break leads to more and more time away from home and someone renting their own apartment, this indicates a need for counseling. Spending time away from home usually doesn’t lead to any real resolution, just more distance.

    How to Control Your Anger

    Someone slides into the parking spot you had your eye on. A coworker takes credit for your work. Your spouse runs up $200 on the credit card without discussing it first. These are things that are apt to make you angry.

    And that’s okay.

    Anger is a natural response to many life events. Like other emotions, anger helps us understand our world and how we feel about it. When managed well, anger can provide a healthy release and be a motivator for transformation. But when we experience too much anger, to the point of becoming out of control, it can have lasting ramifications.

    Our Brain on Anger

    When anger reaches a very high level, our pre-frontal cortex, that is the part of the brain responsible for cognitive thought and reasoning, becomes hijacked. The amygdala, our primal emotional/instinctual part of the brain that induces the “fight or flight” response, takes over and we are no longer capable of rational thought.

    When aroused to anger, our brains can no longer take in new information. This means if our partner or loved one is trying to talk sense into us and explain something, we CANNOT hear them. All we are aware of is that we must defend ourselves as if our very life depends on it. We feel under extreme attack and are ready to fight back.

    How to Control Your Anger

    Now that you know how your brain responds, it’s time to learn some techniques to manage your extreme anger.

    Take a Breather

    You know that the hotter you get, the more your brain shuts down and becomes unable to process any information. There is no sense in you continuing to talk/argue with someone. Your best course of action is to put the fire out before it begins to rage by calling a time out and taking a breather.

    Exercise

    The body’s “fight or flight” response releases powerful hormones that are intended to help us fight or run. Without this physical release, they can linger in the body and cause health problems. Going for a walk, run or lifting weights can be a great way to burn through these hormones and release soothing endorphins.

    Seek Out Counseling

    Managing extreme anger can be very challenging, especially in the beginning. A mental health professional will be able to share coping strategies and techniques to control outbursts.

    The Best Medicine is a Treadmill: How Daily Exercise Can Treat Depression

    According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 9% of American adults live with depression. It’s also worth mentioning that a major depressive episode is the leading cause of disability for Americans between the ages of 15 and 44.

    Antidepressants are commonly prescribed to treat people with moderate or severe depression. And while these drugs do offer some relief, they often come with some pretty nasty side effects such as:

    • headaches
    • nausea
    • trouble sleeping
    • dizziness
    • diarrhea
    • weakness and fatigue
    • anxiety
    • stomach upset
    • dry mouth
    • sexual problems such as low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, or ejaculation problems
    • trouble urinating
    • fast heart rate
    • sweating
    • memory problems
    • fatigue
    • weight gain

    That’s quite a list.

    The obvious problem is these side effects can make someone who is depressed feel even worse. But there is some good news.

    Exercise Helps Beat Depression Naturally

    Studies on exercise and depression are conclusive: Not only does exercise treat depression, it can also prevent it. In fact, researchers from Duke University found exercise to be as effective as medicine.

    Exercise not only increases blood flow to the brain, it also releases endorphins, which are the body’s own natural antidepressants. Exercise also releases other neurotransmitters, like serotonin, which lift mood.

    The really good news is, it only takes moderate exercise three times a week to reap the antidepressant benefits. You don’t have to train for a marathon or a triathlon to feel better. Here are a few exercise ideas to get you started:

    Walk Your Dog

    Take your dog(s) for a half hour walk around the neighborhood. Not only will your body release endorphins but your dog’s health will also benefit from routine exercise.

    Go for a Bike Ride

    Family bike rides are a great way to bond and get a good workout at the same time. If the weather doesn’t permit outdoor biking, a stationary bike is a good investment.

    Swim

    Swimming is one of the absolute best total body exercises. As a bonus, the steady movements through water also has a naturally calming effect.

    Walk at Lunch

    Grab a few friends and/or colleagues on your lunch break and go for a half hour walk.

    Exercise doesn’t have to be hard or complicated. Whatever form you like, commit to doing that at least three times a week and see if you don’t start to feel better.

    Create Trust and Mutual Respect

    Even the most loving of relationships is going to be put to the test every once in a while. All couples experience ups and downs and the stress of every day life. The key is to not take that out on each other.

    Create a safe environment in your relationship where each of you can speak honestly and freely. Never interrupt or yell or belittle the other person. Should things get too heated, step back, and wait until things cool off.

    Don’t Judge

    “For better or for worse.” If you’re married, those are the words you agreed to. If you’re not married, you still made a choice to partner with another human being who has flaws and quirks just like you.

    It’s important to accept your partner and not judge them too harshly. This doesn’t mean you have to like everything they do, and it doesn’t mean you can’t remind them every once in awhile that they need to scoop the cat litter as well.

    But it does mean that you should try and be as compassionate as possible. Compassion is the opposite of judgement and it allows you to be open and fully connect with the ones you love.

    Make Time for Each Other

    It’s far too easy to get busy and neglect the relationship. Many couples get to the point where they become more like roommates than a romantic couple. Don’t allow this to happen. Be sure to make time each week to check in with each other and reconnect.

    Be Responsible for Your Feelings

    No one can “fix us” or make us all better. We must heal ourselves from old wounds and scars (and we all have those!). Our partners should be there to support us in becoming whole, but ultimately it is our responsibility to heal, not theirs.

    These guidelines can help you and your love stay a positive force in each other’s lives. But let’s face it, sometimes life can come at us and before we know it, the relationship is on the rocks.     3 Ingredients to a Happy Marriage

    Have you ever wondered why some marriages last decades while others barely go two years? Why do some couples thrive and grow together while others crash and burn?

    The secret? There are three secrets, actually; three ingredients to a happy and successful marriage. Without all three of these, many couples will struggle to remain connected and committed.

    Communication

    Communication is to a marriage what gasoline is to an automobile: without it, you’re not going anywhere. And the better the communication, the longer the “motor” will last.

    The words we choose to connect with others are incredibly important. Use the right ones and you generate feelings of love, safety, and security. Use the wrong ones and your partner is apt to feel anger and resentment.

    It is often said that HOW you say something is as important as WHAT you say, and in many ways, this is true. When you ask your spouse a question, is their answer thoughtful or dismissive? Do they say, “Yes, that sounds like a great plan,” or “Whatever?” Both are affirmative, but only the first sentence is positive and respectful.

    But perhaps the most important factor of good communication is listening. Many marriages have been improved when one or more people learn how to be a good listener.

    How exactly do you become a good listener? Two ways: Start caring more about your partner – when you care for someone, you are truly interested in what they have to say. Second, when they are speaking, don’t think about other things – don’t think about your day or what you’d like to have for dinner – don’t even think about how you’d like to respond to what your partner is saying, simply LISTEN to them. Give them your full attention.

    The better listeners and communicators you both are, the better partners you can be to each other.

    Know Yourself and Your Partner

    The sad fact is, most people spend more time trying to understand how their smartphone or tablet works than how their own personality – or that of their partner -works. We’re all individuals with unique quirks and behaviors. The more we understand about ourselves and our spouse, the less conflict we’ll experience.

    Put Each Other First

    Happy and successful marriages are the ones where each person is putting their partner’s needs first. When both are doing this, all needs are being met. Problems arise when only one individual meets their partner’s needs. When this happens, one person is happy, the other is left out in the cold.

    Helping Your Aging Parents With Depression

    As our parents age, we want to treasure them for as long as we can, so we look for ways to help them stay healthy and active. But many older people suffer from depression, a condition that is not always easy to battle.

    According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, depression affects more than 6.5 million of the 35 million Americans aged 65 or older. Some have experienced episodes of depression throughout their life, while others may experience the first onset later in life, even well into their 80s and 90s.

    What Causes Depression in Older People?

    As mentioned, preexisting depression often leads to episodes later in life, particularly if the person has never been officially diagnosed or treated. Individuals with a history of anxiety often become more fearful as they age as well. As a result, they often isolate themselves, rarely participating in social activities, which, in turn, leads to depression.

    Some older people have difficulty reviewing their lives. They may not feel proud of the life they’ve led and may get stuck dwelling on the more negative aspects. Perhaps they feel they did not accomplish enough, or they harbor resentment toward an old friend.

    And of course, older people have to not only deal with declining abilities but also the loss of loved ones. A unique reality of aging is that your friends start to die, one by one. It is not uncommon for older people to go to several funerals in a single year.

    How You Can Help

    The very best thing you can do for your parent who you think may be suffering from depression is to offer your love and support. Let them know that you are there for them and happy to help with whatever they may need.

    Having said this, it is equally important that you respect their needs for independence. Don’t try to take control of their life and act as if you know what’s best.

    Also, consider visiting a therapist who can help your parent work through any unresolved issues and offer management strategies. A professional mental health professional can assess your parent to see if they are a good candidate for medication. Sometimes medication can help, other times, it can impair cognitive function. A therapist will know the right approach to take.

    Is My Anger Normal, Or Should I Seek Help?

    Life wouldn’t be life without those little irritants that push our buttons. And when our buttons get pushed, it’s completely natural to feel angry. In fact, anger is a normal emotion that can facilitate better communication and positive change when expressed appropriately.

    But for some people, managing their own anger is challenging. Usually these people are the last to know they even have what others may describe as “toxic” or “out-of-control” anger. That’s because their loved ones have gotten used to regulating their anger for them by hiding their own feelings, choosing their words carefully, and walking on egg shells, all in an effort to “keep the peace.”

    Common Reasons for Intense Anger

    If you are uncertain whether or not you may have anger issues, read the following common reasons for intense anger and see if any of them ring true for you.

    Anger as a Way to Self-Soothe

    Self-medication, as a way to deal with life’s pain, is very common. For those with anger issues, there is a biochemical explanation as to why you may fly off the handle and often.

    One of the hormones secreted by the brain during a fit of anger is called norepinephrine, which acts as an analgesic, or pain reliever. When we are triggered, often that trigger digs up deep wounds and past hurts, whether we are aware of it or not.

    Becoming angry in the moment releases a powerful brain chemical that numbs our emotional pain so we don’t feel vulnerable, ignored, unimportant, rejected, or worthless. But as with any drug, a person can become addicted to their own anger because they become addicted to the chemical reaction of it.

    Self-Empowerment

    Another chemical released by the brain during a fit of anger is called epinephrine. While norepinephrine acts like a pain reliver, epinephrine acts like an amphetamine, allowing us to feel a sudden surge of energy throughout our entire body.

    This adrenaline rush counteracts our feeling of powerlessness in the moment, or maybe in our life in general. How seductive is that? Many medical experts will tell you that epinephrine is every bit as addictive as alcohol and cocaine, so it’s no wonder so many people are addicted to their own anger.

    “Safe” Attachment

    Some of us don’t feel safe in a relationship without a safe bit of distance. This is typically a response to a parent or caretaker being unavailable, unresponsive, or untrustworthy in our past. The adult children of these types of parents feel the need to cultivate a certain emotional detachment in their relationships, and anger is a very effective way of doing that.

    Tips for Managing Anger

    1. Recognize the problem – As with a substance addiction, it’s important to recognize and admit you may have a problem.

    2. Monitor your behavior – Keep an anger journal and log behavior you noticed or you were accused of by others. Note the incident, trigger, and the intensity of your anger from 0-10. Often just seeing your anger on paper will offer some insights into where it’s coming from.

    3. Feel your anger but don’t act on it – Bottling up emotions is never the answer. It’s important for us to feel our feelings, ALL of them. But it’s equally important to regulate our actions. Walk away from potential fights and don’t send that angry email.

    4. Get some help – Speaking with someone about your anger can often help. By uncovering the emotions underneath the anger, you can diffuse it and begin to heal from past traumas.
